Language Animation
When groups from different countries come together, language animation helps to break the ice and facilitates a lively start to shared communication. Creative and playful activities quickly foster an open atmosphere where genuine connection and exchange become possible.
When people from different countries meet at an international encounter, small prompts are often needed to enable true interaction. Whether they are children, youth, or professionals: the initial hesitation to communicate can be significant, particularly in the absence of a shared language.
This is where language animation comes in. It simplifies the start of communication and boosts the dynamics within international groups. Through playful and creative activities, an atmosphere is created in which participants can get to know each other in a relaxed way and feel motivated to acquire new foreign language skills.
Originally developed by the Franco-German Youth Office (FGYO) in the 1990s, the method has been adapted over the decades by various specialist and funding agencies of international youth work to suit their specific contexts. It is highly versatile and can be used in bilateral, trilateral, or multilateral meetings.
IJAB regularly hosts multi-day language animation seminars. These are aimed at all professional and volunteer staff members who organize international youth exchanges or professional programs - regardless of the language combination. Shorter in-house workshops are also available upon request.
In cooperation with its Greek partner, IJAB coordinated a working group on language animation within German-Greek youth exchange between 2018 and 2019. This collaboration resulted in a curated collection of activities and a theoretical introduction, compiled in the resource manual Fruchtsalat (Fruit Salad): German-Greek Language Animation.
Furthermore, the brochure Sprachanimation – inklusiv gedacht (Language Animation – Thinking Inclusively) examines how language animation can be conceived and designed to be inclusive, ensuring participation for all young people regardless of their individual needs.
