Inclusive international youth work

VISION:INCLUSiON

The idea behind it

When working towards making one’s own work more inclusive, the three dimensions of the Inclusion Index, which have been adapted for international youth work, are very helpful:

Creating inclusive cultures

Understanding of inclusive international youth work will be enhanced among the various stakeholders, and this will help to foster an inclusive mindset.

Establishing inclusive structures

Networking structures and forums facilitate joint analysis, professional discussions and mutual support. The various stakeholders are supported in setting up or expanding inclusive structures.

Developing inclusive practices

Framework conditions, guidelines and methods for inclusive international youth work are researched, developed and disseminated. Stakeholders are supported in making their international youth projects more inclusive.

During the first phase of the project, from 2015 to 2017, a strategy was developed to provide organisations and professionals with a practical guide to inclusive international youth work. This was developed in collaboration with international youth work organisations, experts and those directly affected.

From 2018 to 2021, the results were expanded internationally. The focus was on developing practical resources and tools, as well as on strengthening the international perspective.

Panel of experts

A key element of VISION:INCLUSiON was the panel of experts: it comprised professionals from the field of international youth work in Germany, as well as experts from the worlds of research, self-advocacy, politics and practice, who are involved in the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and in the inclusive design of non-formal education.

The expert group provided technical support for the project and served to facilitate networking and the creation of synergies. At the same time, it acted as a link to the various sectors of society.

Members of the expert group were:

Aktion Mensch, bezev – Competence Centre “weltwärts alle inklusive!”, BMBFSFJ, Designbar Consulting – accessible design and communication, Deutsche Gehörlosen Jugend (German Deaf Youth), Deutsche Sportjugend (German Sports Youth), IJAB, Kreisau-Initiative e.V., National Agency JUGEND für Europa, Servicestelle Jugendbeteiligung (Youth Participation Service Centre), Cologne University of Applied Sciences.
